FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

· BAYONET

Q: Is it sharpened on the top?

A: It is not sharpened on the top - it is a false edge.

Q: Is it beveled on both sides of all three edges (bottom, front point and top)?

A: Yes it is beveled on all three sides.

Q: Is this Bayonet offered in just the 7" blade size or does it come in smaller size blades?

A: It comes in only one size.

Q: Could the sheath it comes with be worn on belt, leg or pack straps?

A: The sheath can be altered for all of the above locations.

· COL MOSCHIN

Q: I have heard that the Col Moschin is being discontinued, is this true?

A: NOT TRUE! This is just an unfounded rumor and not based on actual facts. The Col Moschin is a very popular fixed blade and still is in production.

Q: Does the Col Moschin come with a sharpened double edge?

A: Yes it does, but due to US Customs restrictions we cannot legally import them. The Col Moschin was designed to be sharpened on both the edge and the spine. Extrema Ratio makes the knife with just one edge sharpened for US customers. However, some US buyers have sharpened the spine themselves and Extrema Ratio says this does not harm the blade.

· FAIDA/NEMESIS FOLDER

Q: I wonder, why do you call it “Nemesis in Italy/Faida in USA”? Nemesis and Faida have two very different meanings: Nemesis means “a formidable opponent” or in ancient times “an act of divine retribution”, while Faida is a chain of revenges usually between mob families, so it has a pretty negative meaning.

A: The reason for the name difference is this: there is already a knife here in the States named "Nemesis". So the ER knife had be to given a different name to keep things legal and it was named the "Faida". We put both names on our website because a lot of people ask for the ER Nemesis. The knife is sold in Europe with the name Nemesis but has to be sold here with the name of Faida.

Q: I own a number of knives that are sharper out of the box than this one, but are not combat blades. Is the reason that this one is a little less sharp due to it being more of a working blade?

A: Indeed it is possible that the Nemesis could be a bit less sharp than other knives. This is due to the very thick blade and to the angle at which the blade has to be sharpened. Having this original design, the blade is very sturdy and will hold the edge very well, however it is quite difficult to sharpen it to be very, very sharp. (Answer provided by Extrema Ratio Italy.)

Q: Some lock backs have some vertical blade play to them, it's just inherent in the design. This one has a minor amount to it. Should I be concerned?

A: The blade lock will always have some play to it. This is due to a question of tolerances, and where the blade (on the pivot point) has a slot and that is where the locking system will act. This slot will always be a bit wider than the locking system, because of tolerances needed, as otherwise, we will have blades that will not lock into the system at all. (Answer provided by Extrema Ratio Italy.)

Q: The locking system is a back lock, which I understand how to operate, but it also says Lock on one side and Unlock on the other. I read online that there is a way to lock the blade unopened, but didn't see anything described in the manuals. Can you please provide more information on the locking system.

A: The pin in the back where it says "Lock" or "Unlock" is done for two reasons. One, to preventing the blade from opening while in your pocket and folded. Two, when the blade is open and the user is working, for added security he can engage the extra lock, so that even when pressing on the knife handle an accidental press on the release button will not be possible. (Answer provided by Extrema Ratio Italy.)

Q: Does Extrema Ratio make a sheath for the Faida/Nemesis?

A: Currently, there is no sheath made that fits the Faida/Nemesis.

Q: Does the Faida/Nemesis have a chisel grind?

A: No. The Faida/Nemesis has a flat grind.

· FOLDERS - CLICKING NOISE

Q: My folder makes a "clicking" noise when it is closed but it disappears when the folder is open. Is this normal?

A: The clicking sound is actually normal. The stop pin is in fact short and produced with some tolerances. This means that when the two pieces of handles of the folding knives are assembled there is always some space left between them and the stop pin. The clicking sound in fact should only occur when the knife is closed. This is because the pin is loose. When the knife is open the blade presses towards the pin and the clicking noise disappears.

If the customer wants to get rid of the clicking noise, he can disassemble the handle and put a little Super Glue on the stop pin (on one side). (Answer provided by Extrema Ratio Italy)

· FOLDERS - "PLAY" IN HEAVY DUTY FOLDERS

Q: I noticed some "play" in my MPC folder, what causes that?

A: Regarding knives such as the MPC, Nemesis, and Fulcrum II, a certain movement will always be present and it is due to tolerances and to the backlock spring. The BFs, etc. do not have this problem because they have a liner lock.

If you wish to check your folder, Extrema Ratios suggests you do this simple test:

Open knife, put it into lock position. Turn it over so that you can see the sharpened edge of the knife. Now watch your fingers and hands; put them on the handle only (not over the slot were the blade should fit into when closed). Hit the back part of the blade on to a table or piece of wood. If the blade does not lock (or fold) then the knife is safe, if you think it is not safe then please return the knife to us and we will check it and, for safety reasons only, put in a new spring. (Information provided by Extrema Ratio.)

· FULCRUM K9

Q: Can the Fulcrum K9 be sharpened on the spine?

A: Indeed the K-9 can be sharpened on top of the Tanto point. (only the few inches on top of the point where the lower edge meets the upper edge). The user cannot sharpen the whole back of the knife as at a certain point the knife blade, where it is rectangular, becomes too thick to be sharpened properly. Also, the sharpening on the top must be done by professional sharpener. Please also be reminded that because this is done outside Extrema Ratio and by someone we do not know, the warranty will not cover any damage that may occur during this procedure. (Answer provided by Extrema Ratio Italy)

· PANTHER

Q: I saw a demo of the Panther on “YouTube”. Can you give me info about it?

A: The Panther was commissioned by some Slovenian Army training units. They had this design in their head and wanted it also for some other units. The Panther was also sold in a very small batch on the domestic market. This is done in order to test it in the field and have customer feed back. Already in the development stages of the product we encountered several problems and did not like the outcome. The handle is in G-10 material and not our usual aluminum. Problems occurred also during the testing. So there are no Panthers being sold now. The Panther is being redesigned with aluminum handles and different liners. As of now, I don't know if the blade shape will remain the same or will be changed. (Answer provided by Extrema Ratio Italy.)

· RAO FOLDER

Q: Can I get an extra sheath for my RAO?

A: Yes you can. We currently have sheaths both without the sharpener and sheaths with the diamond sharpener.

Q: How do I open the RAO?

A: The RAO has a pin screwed into it when shipped out. This pin (attached with a small elastic rope) serves both not to accidentally open the knife when closed and also to make the RAO into a fixed blade when opened by inserting the pin again.

If you unscrew the pin and the RAO still doesn't open. Then try lifting the blade lock. There is a little black button on the side of the handle (front part near the pivot point of the blade). It is actually the lock when the blade is in open position (it prevents it from closing, in fact to close the blade you have to pull the button upwards). Pull up the button when the blade is closed, it will release the blade. (Answer provided by Extrema Ratio Italy.)

Q: Does the RAO have a chisel grind?

A: No. The RAO has a flat grind.

Q: Can I get a pin for my RAO that has a swivel on it?

A: Currently a swivel pin is not available for the RAO. If Extrema Ratio makes a swivel pin, Xtreme Knives will stock them and send them to any RAO owner who requests one. We'll put them on our website when/if they are available so people can order them. We'll give them away free to any RAO owner who has ordered from us.

· SHEATHS

Q: Why are some of the knives so hard to remove from the sheath?

A: Many of the Extrema Ratio have tightly fitted sheaths. These knives been designed for Italian military groups. Extrema Ratio has followed their instructions in manufacturing them. The military wanted a tight retention system so the knives were difficult to remove from the sheath for safety reasons.

The retention system is made in such a way that you should be pressing the back flap away from the handle with your thumb while holding the knife by its handle and extracting.

· SHRAPNEL

Q: The Shrapnel has a shorter handle, why is this?

A: It does have a shorter handle and it was designed purposely that way. The designer told me that the Shrapnel was designed so it could be used as a back-up knife. He put the shorter handle on it so it would be a more discreet carry. As he put it: “I wanted a knife that could be carried under an Armani Jacket”. (Personal note: I suspect the designer wears an Armani Jacket and that his EDC is a Shrapnel.)

Q: Can the Shrapnel be sharpened on the spine?

A: This is not recommended.

· NO LONGER BEING PRODUCED

Q: I couldn't find a certain knife on your website but you used to have it, why isn't it available?

A: Extrema Ratio has "retired" models and is not producing them. If the knife becomes available in the future, we will stock it again. Here is a list of the current out-of-production knives:

A: Xtreme Knives doesn't have a sharpening service for Extrema Ratio knives. However, the knife can be sent to Extrema Ratio Italy for sharpening. The sharpening is free - the owner pays only for the shipping costs.

Q: How is length of the blade measured?

A: The Extrema Ratio blade lengths, as given on the website, are from the guard (or end of handle if no guard) to the blade tip. In other words, the full length of the blade. FYI: some States in determining lawful length will measure the blade as above: from guard to tip. Other States determine the lawful length with a measurement of just the sharpened length of the blade.

It is the responsibility of the buyer, not Xtreme Knives, to determine and follow all local, state, federal and international laws and ordinances regarding the purchase, possession, and use of any item purchased from us.
